Who Gets to Speak? A Taskuvikerkaar Talk with Grigorjeva & Puumeister
6th of August 17.00
Where do we draw the line between right and wrong opinions in Estonia?
In May, the Supreme Court ruled that the phrase “from the river to the sea” is not associated with the actions of the terrorist organization Hamas—at least not in the eyes of a reasonable average person.
Where previous debates around speech regulation focused on hate speech against specific groups, the emphasis has now shifted toward national security threats. But it’s not just the police that can curb freedom of opinion—so can softer forms of pressure: social media attacks, disapproval from friends, or even your own conscience.
When are such restrictions justified, and when are they used to push through far less noble agendas in the name of public protection? And can a court-commissioned semiotic analysis really help answer questions like these?
Taskuvikerkaar attempts to unpack these complex issues in an open recording—breaking things down with the help of semiotician Ott Puumeister and professional contrarian Sveta Grigorjeva.
The audience is welcome to ask questions. There will also be wine and cookies. Everyone is welcome—regardless of opinion.
