Special tour: Cannes red carpet with Erlend Štaub

Kary H. Lasch's (1914-1993) exhibition "Golden Years" focuses on the atmosphere and spirit of the 1950s, which the photographer captured exceptionally well. Born in Prague and lived in Sweden, Lasch was a bold and open creator who fought for the moments he wanted to capture. Thanks to this, his career unfolded in the backstage of stars, at the heart of the captivating glamour of the Cannes Film Festival, and in the company of world-famous artists – places accessible only to a select few.

In 2024, one of Estonia's most experienced red carpet photographers, Erlend Štaub, photographed the Cannes Film Festival for the tenth time. The stars, the red carpet, the behind-the-scenes glamour – Erlend is the perfect person to discuss Kary's favorite subjects.

The stories of both photographers illustrate that if you have a clear goal and a door is slammed in your face, there is always a way to use another door or find some other creative way to achieve your goal.

The exhibition introduction will be conducted by Fotografiska Tallinn guide Elo Aun. Having met Kary's close friend Michel Hjorth, Elo is well-equipped to answer any questions about the "Golden Age."

At the center of Lasch's work stands Cannes with its film festival – a vibrant organism of superstars, directors, journalists, and lavish opulence, accented by adventurers from around the world. The photo collection displayed at Fotografiska takes a leap back into the star-studded world of Cannes, telling extraordinary stories of the mischievous photographer among world stars.

The exhibition remains open until September 8, 2024.

Erlend Štaub

Star photographer Erlend Štaub is the only Estonian to gain access to the prestigious Cannes Festival in France, capturing the stars of the film world. "Unfortunately, every year there are fewer and fewer famous people I haven't photographed yet," comments the photographer himself. When photographing celebrities, he tries to leave the viewer with the impression that they were alone in the room with the subject.
