On the walls of the ground floor café, outside of Fotografiska's regular exhibition schedule, we provide space for emerging artists at the beginning of their creative journey. This time, we are featuring local artist Liis Karu, whose exhibition will adorn the first-floor café starting from August 2024.

On August 21st at 6 PM, the opening will take place – Liis Karu will have a conversation with Maarja Loorents, the founder and exhibition director of Fotografiska Tallinn. The inspiring talk will be held on the 1st floor and is free for everyone.

„Lilli süda“ / „The Heart of Lily“

Liis Karu: Plants whispering to me all my deepest desires, making me long for another world, making my body one of them. Feeling the grass, sand, rocks, moss, wind with greater intensity.

All my senses are opening up to their voices, songs, words. There is so much beauty in this world and it might never reveal itself to me unless I let myself go. Go on a journey, where my mind already travels, and let my body release me, forgive me, love me. There is no escaping this body. Even though I don’t define myself through it, it still holds me and carries me around, making my soul and mind depend on it. Even the heart is just pumping blood. Does love really live inside me?

Liis Karu

Liis Karu studied photography at the Pallas University of Applied Sciences. In her work, she focuses on capturing nature through her own emotional spectrum. She calls her work photo-poetry and compares her images to poetry, where we use words and figures that are more abstract and symbolic, marking certain feelings. The words we use daily gain a new, expanded, or more personal meaning in poetry thanks to rhythm or different placement.

Liis photographs nature in the same way – finding a world that opens up only to her within shapes visible to everyone. Therefore, the finished photos are more abstract, with their focus turned inward, towards emotional imagery.
